LJ Interests meme results

  1. belle and sebastian:
The paradigm of the successful "sensitive" indie rock band. Stuart Murdoch and his friends may be losing it, but they've still got one of the most impressive backlog of simply amazing pop songs of any band in the past ten years.
  2. conan o´brien:
The greatest entertainer alive today, and one of the all-time greats as well.
  3. fútbol:
A real sport, like hockey. I think Americans call it "socker" or something.
  4. indie rock:
    I'M SO TOTALLY FUCKING INDIE!
  5. massachusetts:
Possibly our greatest state. City of Boston to the east, beautiful mountains to the West.
  6. neutral milk hotel:
Pretty good project for Jeff Mangum. They love this over at Pitchfork.
  7. replacements:
Paul Westerberg, as far as I'm concerned, was simply THE voice of the 80's. He spoke for every disenfranchised, disenchanted, and very, very drunk youth who ever woke up and wondered if it was all worth it. Incredible songs.
  8. syracuse university:
    I had a blast.
  9. ultimate frisbee:
A great game, no doubt. This, along with that guy Ed, basically defined the summer of 2002 for me and my Madison friends.
  10. zamboni revolution:
Improv Comedy collective from SU. Hope Laura G, Jon Moses, et al are still kickin' it live. Matt Finley and I tried out for this when it first started but didn't make it. It was probably for the best- I went onto Penguins when it formed, and Matt went onto secure his legend in other ways. I miss Matt Artus, Nick G, and all the founding members.

11:33 pm - That stupid-ass yellow smiley face and his nasty parlor tricks

In case you all hadn't heard already, I'm just letting you all know about the nationwide screenings of the documentary "WALMART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE" in thousands of locations all across the country this week.

Just go to www.walmartmovie.com and check out "Find a Screening." For those of you still at SU, there are a bunch of screenings this week in 'Cuse and the surrounding areas. No matter where you are, you'll still be able to catch a screening at some point this week near you.

I saw it today, and I can't even begin to describe how shocked and moved I was, despite all of my misgivings about the corporation and its painful mediocrization of America and various other places in the world, in the first place. Whether you shop there or not, I highly, highly recommend checking out the doc.

Hope everyone is doing well! Peace~ TY

1:51 am - Just thinking
Today, I decided to copy my roommate's Al Green CD and listened to it on the way to work. During my break, I picked up a copy of The Go! Team CD. After I got home, I wound up playing the bassline to "My Best Friend's Girl" by the Cars. (...yeah, really complicated).

Tonight on latenight TV, the musical guest on Letterman was Al Green. The musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel was The Go! Team. The musical guest on Conan was Ric Ocasek.

The more I think about it, the more frightening it all is. So, I'll choose not to think about it, and enjoy this episode of King of the Hill where Dale gets a job with the adhesive company. This show can be pretty great sometimes.

11:48 pm - Hey, they're trying to learn for free!
Last night, I went to see the new Wallace and Gromit movie, and it's fucking awesome.
Later, I went into 14th Street to check out The Cassettes, and they're fucking awesome.
Tonight, the Halos eliminated the Yankees, and it's fucking awesome.

Nice to see A-Rod earning his $60 billion there in the 9th.

Keep your eyes pealed, TDC is coming back soon, and you'll never know what hit you. But while you're waiting for that, go see Wallace and Gromit.

Profane post!

11:23 am - It's Expected I'm Gone
So I changed my facebook geography to say that I'm in Birmingham, AL, working at a liquor store called Lucky's. Three people, all intelligent, have asked me if this is true, and wondering why the hell I'm in Alabama. The only element of truth is that there is a liquor store (possibly drive-thru) in Birmingham called Lucky's. My friend Adam found it out and began the joke. He is, in fact, still in CT preparing for the LSATs. I am, in fact, still in Arlington, VA, working in Bethesda, MD, and tearing it up in Washington, DC. (Facebook won't let me change my geography back until next month) Any more details can be obtained through an email or telephone call. I miss all of you.

Love,
Me

By the way, getting to see Steve Earle, Joan Baez, and The Coup and to be a part of the biggest peace rally in decades was indispensable. More on that later, hopefully.

12:09 am - The Big Stick
A general update.

LIVIN'
I just moved into a new place here in Arlington, and it's wonderful so far. Good space, good roommate. I had a good time living with Brian and Drew in the tenement a few blocks over, but all good things have to come to an end. Plus, the two of them got a great place on Capital Hill. I'll be out of town this weekend if they end up having a housewarming party, but I'll be around for the others. And there will be others. Go ahead and <mailto:tywilliamson@gmail.com>email</a> if you'd like my new address or land line number.

SHOWS AND THE SCENE
I've been getting to hang out with Brittany a lot more recently, which has been cool, especially since we're definitely part of two different worlds down here. We met up with our cousins (who it's also great to be nearby) downtown to see Todd Barry at the Improv, and he was fucking right-on; everything that I'd expected. Hopefully I'll go see M.I.A. at 9:30 next wednesday night. I don't think I know anyone down here who's into her, but it should be a good time nonetheless.

ASPIRATIONS AND SHIT
Arlington's earned the tag "NJ of DC", but regardless it's a pretty enriching place. In addition to the great bars and free movies most weeknights, I've been doing a little stand-up, which has actually been going surprisingly well. The promoter's cool and so are most of the other comics. Ryan Conner and Rory Scovel are two worth keeping an eye out for. Most of the people I've met are treating this as a hobby, but we all have the same overarching goals in common. At least the connections are good. And I've made some great ones, even if they don't lead to any dividends for a while.

LISTENIN'
I discovered an amazing vinyl place in Clarendon called Orpheus. The other day, I picked up the find of a lifetime- Damned Damned Damned still sealed, it's original Stiff issue from '77, YELLOW vinyl. I can't believe I actually own it, and got it at a great value. I feel kind of bad how I unintentionally took advantage of the hirsute barefoot old guy with talons who runs the place, but then, he named the price. And he wears no shoes. And has talons. Soon thereafter, I found the Minutemens' swan song Three Way Tie (for Last) for about 7 bucks. I can't wait to get a record player down here.

I need to go unwind with some Conan. Home in about 15 hours.

current music: Ataque 77- "Hacelo Por Mi"

9:15 am - Banned in DC
Here I am. Camp was a blast, though a strange aberration when I look back on it now. Pretty excited to be down here in Washington. Lots of people to see, missing a lot of people, too, obviously.

I saw The Spinto Band's review on Pitchfork yesterday, which was exciting. They're going to be big, and they deserve it; they've busted their asses for a while. Good inspiration, I guess.

current music: Jawbreaker- "Boxcar"

I hope everyone is well and kickin' it. Nothing quite like a summer in rural Maine. Things are good, stories and stuff later. For now, snail mail is the thing:

Tyler Sonnichsen
Camp Laurel
P.O. Box 327
Readfield, ME 04355

If you'd like, send me a letter and I'll write you back. Email access and cell phone service around here don't exactly flow like the Penobscot (Maine humor!!), but if you write in any way you should hear back sooner or later.

Peace to everyone!

8:54 pm - 6 Songs Dealie
Alright, I've been tagged by a Mr. Parsons to throw down my six favorite songs of the moment, then pick 6 who have to do the same. Here goes...

  • "Horror Business" by The Misfits...Man, does this band suck without Glenn Danzig and does Danzig suck without this band. They had tons of great songs with their poppy punk that was horribly recorded but gifted with the greatest gimmick in the history of rock n' roll. Plus, that Danzig hollar was nuttintafuckwit' (Sidenote: this supplied the perfect soundtrack to Pw/op's "digiorno" ad, which may be coming to the internet near you soon!)
  • "The Town Halo" by A.C. Newman...I got this New Pornographer's solo album, and it really is excellent. This song is the highlight for me; gotta love any power pop song that substitutes a bowed cello for a bassline.
  • "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" by McLusky...This song just kicks ass. And, not in the colloquial sense, either. It literally kicks my ass and I love it. And how could it not be amazing with a title like that? ROCK!!!
  • "Hope" by The Descendents...Probably the best song they ever recorded (besides 'Wienerschnitzel' of course), and Milo wrote it! A perfect Descendents song.
  • "The Sweat Descends" by Les Savy Fav...Most of their stuff just rips, and resident fat-guy-who-breaks-everything singer Tim Harrington is awesome here.
  • "$10" by M.I.A....I don't know why Maya made "Galang" the first single, since it's kinda crappy. If she wanted to get Tamil into the pop charts, she could have gone with this one, probably the best song on the album. Quality dance music...Damn, she's hot.

Okay, now I pick six of those of you recently subjected to my list (and all-too-common Brown fetish) who haven't done this yet..hmm. How about...

  • bammadeinfrance
  • lunathecat
  • silentviolin
  • giveup_result
  • drinkaplacebo
  • comradestrumski

Inspired by one Mr. Jeffrey James, I figured it wouldn't hurt to list some musical works which I'm planning on obtaining (one way or another) before I move to Maine:

  • Spoon- "Girls Can Tell"
  • Belle and Sebastian- "Push Barman to Open Old Wounds"
  • Descendents- "Somery"
  • Lee Morgan- "Sidewinder"
  • Stephen Malkmus- "Face the Truth"
  • That lovable red-headed new pornographer A.C. Newman- "The Slow Wonder"
  • Misfits- "Collection II"

Tack on the third season of In Living Color to that list and I'm good.

Anyone with affirmation (i.e. thoughts about said works) or alternative ways to get me them, hit it. I've gotta get some sleep so I can get up early in order to finance this.

11:41 pm - The Best Concerts of my Time at SU
This has been in the works for a while. Actually, no, it hasn't, but I figured what better time to grind it out than now. I think I've got five in this one.

THE BEST SHOWS (MUSIC) OF MY TIME AT SU

  • THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS W/ OKGO - WATER STREET MUSIC HALL - 10.26.01
I think of this show in a lot of respects. Maybe a bonding experience between Finley, Parsons, Levine, and I. Maybe my first road trip of college. Maybe just a fucking awesome show by a legendary band, supported by a great up-and-coming band from Chicago (who were soon thereafter watered down to shit by a major label, granted, but still rocked). The Johns with their three Dans were incredibly entertaining, and their set covered tons of territory from their storied two decades of playing together. Finley told me that John Linnell is normally a jerk, but on that night, even he saw fit to let some of the fans in the front row mash on his keyboard a little bit. Plus, OKGO opened with a cover of The Smiths' "Panic." Unforgettable.

  • BEN FOLDS W/ RUFUS WAINWRIGHT AND TEGAN & SARA - STANLEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, UTICA - 04.03.03
Tegan & Sara were okay, and Rufus was pretty good, but Ben Folds put on the greatest one-man performance I've ever seen or likely will ever see. His show at SU this past January was lots of fun, but it didn't amaze me like Folds did on his own sophomore year. He told some great stories, performed a fucking incredible 5-minute drum solo, and conducted a surprisingly tuneful audience through the harmonies in "Not the Same" and "Army." Also, watching the way Levine got into this was almost as entertaining within itself.

  • THE ROOTS W/ COMMON - GOLDSTEIN AUDITORIUM - 04.12.05
After bringing a series of crappy-to-good hiphop shows to the hill (Blackalicious was pretty good), UU Concerts finally hit it with this one. Common was terrific, and the Roots absolutely blew up in everyone's faces. In almost any other case, a 45-minute encore would have seemed excessive, but here they traversed almost every genre of popular music and kicked ass at doing it. Plus, ?uestlove unleashed his massive 'fro. Nobody could have asked for anything more, really.

  • BELLE & SEBASTIAN - TOWER THEATRE, PHILLY / AQUALUNG, MADRID - 05.03.02 / 03.10.04
I'm surprised how people react when it comes up how I've seen this band, twice at that. The shows were both very good, though different from one another. The Philly show was more grandiose, and the one in Spain was poppier. Plus, they both came at pivotal times. The first was an outstanding way to end a great freshman year. The second was the night before a tragedy in Madrid would change the world. Plus, Stuart Murdoch is the man. And I got to bring my sister to the latter.

  • GOLDFINGER W/ ALLISTER & STRAIGHTER THAN PETE - BRIDGE ST. MUSIC HALL - 09.14.02
Goldfinger, considering how lame they've gotten, became one of my favorite live bands in my first couple years of college. Their live show was usually pretty redeeming. Plus, Allister was surprisingly great this night, and of course, Straighter than Pete pulled a great gig. Maybe not as big a deal for Reever, Eric and co. as opening for Fitty Cent, but this was a great time regardless.

  • FLOGGING MOLLY W/ ANDREW W.K., ALLISTER, AND SOME OTHER BAND - WATER ST. MUSIC HALL - 10.29.02
Okay, Allister completely sucked this time. Anyway, getting to this gig was probably the best story. Leif, Nikki, Chris Rosenbluth, and I took a ride in Duke's delapidated car (sadly, the nicest one they had between the three of them) that nearly overheated three times on the way to and from Rochester. Somehow, we survived, and got scissor-kicked in the face by Irish-Expatriate rock and RAAAAAAAAAWWWKKKKKKKK PARTY RAGOUGHR!! What a bill the top two bands made. Andrew W.K. is an incredibly nice guy, too. The more you know.

  • HONORABLE MENTIONS I DON'T HAVE THE TIME/PATIENCE TO GO INTO DETAIL OVER: Ash at Irving Plaza in NYC 06.13.03... The Shins at Moby Dick in Madrid 04.13.04... Beck w/ the Flaming Lips at the Landmark Theatre 10.26.02 (would have made the top 5 if Beck hadn't been dying of food poisoning)... Blink-182 w/ New Found Glory at the NY State Fair 09.02.01 (don't laugh; Blink put on an awesome show, and it was a great kick-off for college)...Ted "The Man" Leo & the Pharmacists in the Schine Underground 04.23.05 (because, well, he's the man)

Alright. There you go. My entries probably won't be this all-out from here on in. Cry.

11:15 pm - The Best Comedy Shows of my time at SU
Alright, a cluster of entries! I decided to divide this list up even further. Check it.

THE BEST COMEDY SHOWS OF MY TIME AT SU

  • DANIEL TOSH & ZACK GALIFIANAKIS - GOLDSTEIN AUDITORIUM - 03.25.05
This was easily the best comedy show I saw in four years at SU. Tosh was magnificent; I couldn't remember any comedian (other than Mitch Hedberg, who we'll discuss in a minute) who made me laugh as consistently and sincerely. My stomach hurt by the end of his set, and Galifianakis hadn't even come on yet. Of course, Zach was pretty drunk, but could still play his piano gracefully and opened with the joke, "When I drink, my southern accent comes back. I start saying things like 'y'all'..and, 'nigger.'" He wasn't quite as great or consistent as Tosh, but he was still better than almost any other comedian who I saw in Goldstein in four years. A riot.
  • DAVE ATTELL, LEWIS BLACK, AND MITCH HEDBERG - LANDMARK THEATER - 09.27.03
Look at this bill! Only $30- that was $10 apiece to see three of my favorite comedians. Black wasn't quite as great doing standup as he is on his weekly Daily Show appearances, and Attell was on for a bit long, but I he did tell two jokes that had me cracking up for a solid two minutes apiece. And what could have been better than seeing Mitch during his prime? In March, when I found out about his death, the first thing I thought was how grateful I was that I had this opportunity to see him.
  • DAVE CHAPPELLE - GOLDSTEIN AUDITORIUM - 11.16.02
I think this was right before his show launched and his career shot into the stratosphere. At any rate, his standup was solid per usual, and I think he had all the white kids on campus talking like pimps for a couple of weeks.

9:41 pm - The Worst Shows I've Seen in the last 4 years
Sorry for the hiatus, but you know, I did have to "graduate" and everything. I added my ticket from the Blood Brothers show the other night (which was incredible, by the way) to my pile of stubs from the past four years, and decided to throw together yet another list. I divided them up into different subcategories. I thought I'd bash the worst shows first.

THE WORST SHOWS I SAW DURING MY TIME AT SU

  • JIM BREUER AND SOME GUY WHO WAS EVEN WORSE THAN HIM - SOPHOMORE YEAR, SOMETIME IN GOLDSTEIN
I didn't even save this ticket stub. Man, they sucked. What a pair of no-talent jackasses. The dude who opened for Breuer made a bunch of idiotic jokes about Muslims then proceeded to make fun of the people who were offended. It's called having enough substance to back up jokes like that, asshole. And I still don't understand why Jim Breuer's famous.
  • JUICE JAM '03 - 09.07.03 - GOLDSTEIN AUDITORIUM
Even Gym Class heroes couldn't redeem this. I also arrived too late to catch my friend Matt doing stand-up; even he didn't understand why they wanted him to perform there. Nappy Roots headlined and were pretty terrible. I was so elated they actually got real bands like De La Soul for Juice Jam the following year.
  • WBCN RIVER RAVE - 05.25.03 - MANSFIELD, MA
I had never gone to any of these radio-run festivals in CT, but Nikki and her friends (along with the promise of seeing Blur) convinced me to try it out, especially since WBCN had a decent reputation. After this, I realized why I never went to any of these. Granted, I had a good time with Nikki, Erin, Naim, et al, and it was very cool to see Interpol, Jane's Addiction, Beck, Jack Johnson, and Dropkick Murphy's. You think any festival with a line-up that good would surely be worth it. But having to sit through Saliva and Good Charlotte seriously made me rethink my entire existence. Saliva have to be the worst fucking band in the universe. Come on! Their biggest hit was basically a string of ononmatopoeia and their set made me want to claw my eyes out. I also couldn't get to the bathrooms without navigating through a sea of piss-ass drunk people. Did I mention that Blur cancelled?

I'll be right back with the good shows.

4:59 pm - 6 Favorite Places in Syracuse
Alright, I'm sitting here and most of my friends have left and/or are in the process of leaving. Graduation went well, and it isn't setting in that harshly yet. I figured it would be way to hard to quantify my favorite college moments into a list, but an easier way to categorize the moments is into the places where many of them occurred. This is my ten favorite locations in Syracuse, taking into account the times I had there, the quality of the establishment, etc.

Arbitrary Number of Favorite Spots in Syracuse

  • Westcott Street

It's kind of hard to explain, especially since a giant confederacy of morons ended up causing Planet 505 to go out at the beginning of this year, but there's more culture crammed into that one block of Westcott than there is in most of the other parts of the city combined. The cinema has screened countless great movies in my time here, Alto Cinco has some of the best Mexicanish cuisine, and to go into the good times I had at 505 would be an entry unto itself. (STPete shows w/ the Toasters, et al and of course a couple Skaloweens).

  • The Sound Garden

Yeah! Motherfucker!! I spent so goddamn much money here, but I'll be damned if I won't miss it like crazy. This is my favorite music/movie store ever and it just so happens to be right in the city where I attended college. Ain't that something. Because it is. Eric Guercio, one of their managers and a good friend of mine, is indisputably the man. The amount of CLASSICS they had on sale for $10 nearly made me have to change my pants every time I went in there. I made sure that nearly every friend I had made it there and got hooked.

  • University Union

This is a big one. I've been in that place steadily since freshman year in one capacity or another, mostly relating to the radio. It's where the magic happens. Gorode just needs to stop throwing shit around and keep putting on great concerts like he does. I won't forget all the presidents- Matt Singer, Dennis Jacobs, and of course Pete Thomas.

  • Shaw Hall

I lived here for half of my undergraduate career, and one of those two years one freshman year on Shaw 5, indisputably the best floor in SU history. I don't think you could beat Matt Finley, Andrew Parsons, Lex Romeo, Jason Fox, Reever, Matt Lascelle, Beth Glas, Clay Cox, Carmen Jackson (this list goes on and on) running around causing chaos as the constellation that we were. The dining hall was even good at one point. The Hidden Hall wasn't bad senior year, either. My residents definitely didn't suck.

  • Jake's House in Baldwinsville

The first time I ever went there, he hosted the Penguins for a barbecue at the end of our freshman year, and strangely enough, I've never had anything but good memories of the place. From the big day there in the spring of sophomore year filming Too Many Arnolds, American Idol, and of course The Story of Marcel, to the great days out there when I got back from Spain (watching "El Chupacabra" and just fucking around with Harold, et al), it's always been a good time. And he knows how much we all love his sister.

  • Happy Endings

My friend Andrea told me when we were in Madrid that Happy Endings had closed down. "Well, see you later, first two and a half years of college." Honestly, there was no better Saturday night spot for my friends and I back when we were largely non-drinkers. And whenever we went there, good things would happen. I don't think anyone's forgotten about the time that Andrew, Jason, and I began talking about various ways in which to blow, catch, and use a kiss while our female friends were amazed at how much time we could burn talking about nothing and loving it.

I'll probably update really soon with a list of the best shows I've seen in college. Get excited. Now. Do it or I'll punch your whole family in the face.

6:57 pm - Addendumses
Song that gets better every time I hear it:
"2 Far (feat. Wiley" by Dizzee Rascal.
I may reconsider reevaluating "Stand Up Tall."

Movie thet gets better every time I watch it:
"Mulholland Drive"
I finally showed this to my friend, and she was confused to all ends of hell, despite how I was describing it to her. I drew even more out of it as I was thinking after watching it. Regardless, she still thought it was really great.

I should make a list of the best/worst shows I've seen here, and my best SU moments. It won't be too difficult. I just need the time. This week has been pretty amazing.

12:13 am - Top 10 Albums of my Time at SU
I don't think I'm gonna put commentary, since this is just an excuse to further procrastinate studying for COM Law, but at any rate, I feel like owe the world another one of these things. Here are my ten favorite albums of my time here at SU. Keep in mind that this is a combination of evaluating them from a critical standpoint and my own personal affinity/experience with them. That being said,

The Top Ten Albums of my Time at SU

  1. Sondre Lerche - "Faces Down" (Fall 2002)
  2. Blur - "Think Tank" (Spring 2003)
  3. Aesop Rock - "Bazooka Tooth" (Spring 2003)
  4. The Arcade Fire - "Funeral" (Fall 2004)
  5. The Coup - "Party Music" (Fall 2001)
  6. Tom Waits - "Alice" (Fall 2002)
  7. Converge - "Jane Doe" (Spring 2003)
  8. Dizzee Rascal- "Boy in Da Corner" (Fall 2003)
  9. Wilco - "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (Fall 2001)
  10. Ash - "Free All Angels" (Spring 2002)

If you want commentary on the top 3, check out 20Watts, soon to be published by University Union. It'll be somewhere, probably the Schine Atrium or something. Contact me if you want me to save you a copy.

current mood: must study
current music: Spoon - "Sister Jack"

3:18 am - My 10 Best Classes at SU
1. GEO 362: Cities of Europe (Fall 2003) Professor John Western
It's pretty hard to convince someone that this class was the best one that I took in my four years here, but in terms of sheer enjoyability, propensity to apply myself, and the balance of quality and quantity, Western hit a bullseye. I wish that there hadn't been that annoying girl who went up to him to make (usually) pointless small talk after every single class. EVERY. SINGLE. CLASS. I couldn't ask him any follow-up questions, which was disappointing, but it didn't matter. I felt like the biggest geography nerd when I realized how much I looked forward to sitting through this class twice a week. I mean, what we learned was all just so damn conceivable and comprehensive to understanding the way the world works today, Europe especially, obviously. And Western is a better Michael Palin than Michael Palin.

2. TRF 255: Intro to Production (Spring 2003) Professor James Biddle
Biddle is one of those people who you can travel all over the world (even Indiana) for the rest of your life and not meet anyone exactly like him. He was a perfect fit for my first production class, with a laid-back policy and constant wisecracks. I’ll never forget this moment of epiphany I had when I realized, just like all of us TRF majors did, that we’re basically in this together. The nervous cut-throat competitive freshman Newhouse atmosphere had dissipated by now, and what remained were a few fine pieces about film noir detectives, a guy who accidentally screws another guy, a Linklater-esque piece on Westcott Street, and something infomercial about giving yourself tapeworm.

3. MAX 123: Critical Issues for the United States (Spring 2002) Professor Bruce Dayton
Dayton, more than any other professor here, reinforced and strengthened my political beliefs in a convincing yet not-whatsoever self-righteous way. You could tell how viciously far to the left this guy was, but he never stopped asking terrific questions of us no matter where in the political spectrum we came from. This class moved me pretty far to the left, and made me realize how much I like politics.

4. GEO 172: World Cultures (Fall 2001) Professor Euan Hague
An introduction to TRF and "After Hours" legend Mark Pierce, and the Maxwell school, my first semester here. It was pretty fascinating. In recitation with Mark, being the only two people who ever talked made us favorites with the quintissential Kentuckian Jamey Essex, who was a phenomenal TA, if not the best professor once the dapper Scotsman Hague split for Depaul. Legitimately interesting case studies were a plus.

5. ANT 528: The Iberian Peninsula (Spring 2004) Professor Guillermo Becerra
If I ranked these classes solely based on the amount of fucking awesome shit we did in them, this would be #1 unquestionably. Guillermo brought us to explore caves in the Basque country, and wander through Roman ruins in Extremadura during the hot season. With all of his smarmy connections, Guillermo gave us experiences unlike remotely anything that Linda, Lyndsay, Mike, Kelsey, and I could have had back home. Gerardo was one badass motherfucker of a bus driver, too.

6. PAF 101: Intro to Public Policy (Spring 2003) Professor Bill Coplin
While I was taking this class, I couldn't stand it and I wanted to kill Bill Coplin and his entire family. Now... I still want to kill Bill Coplin and his entire family (well, maybe wound him and give his family dirty looks, at least), and I am definitely glad I took it. I don't think there is a class exactly like this one anywhere else in the country. It also reinforces my concept of how Maxwell is really the best school within SU.

7. SPA 400: XXth Century Spanish Cinema (Spring 2004) Professor Luis “The Ladies’ Man” Dorrego
I took this with a bunch of my closest friends in Madrid, and I got to see, just like Prof. David Coryell's Film Noir class (which I'd probably put within my top 15 classes) a ton of great films that I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. "Un Chien Andalou" and "Viridiana" were fucked up in the coolest possible way. Those Spaniards..they know how to do it right. And "Tesis" will scare the shit out of you.

8. SPA 301: Approaches to Reading Texts (Spring 2003) Professor Kathleen Everly
Odd how the only decent Spanish class I’ve taken on campus has been under a thirty-ish Minnesotan woman. The language program blows at SU, but I actually came to enjoy this class. Having Elie there to provide his useful commentary didn’t hurt, either.

9. COM 345: Critical Issues in the Media (Spring 2004) Professor Ángel Badillo
I can’t believe I fucking got away with this! A semester after a bunch of my friends spent two exams contemplating suicide in the Bob Thompson class, I was watching “Dancer in the Dark,” “Cidade de Deus,” and sharing frank conversations about the American news media with a young professor from Salamanca who really knew his shit. I feel so guilty, yet I can’t help but smile when I think about how little actual work I had to do to slash this requirement for my major.

10. COM 506: Communications Law (Spring 2005) Professor Mark Obbie
This is random, I know. I never expected to like Com Law as much as I do. The combination of Prof. Obbie, and having a great TA in Ulf, along with lucking out with group partners for the projects has actually made this entire experience enjoyable. I didn't even have to read or study that much. Thank you, Pat Longstaff, for spending this semester in London and not teaching this.

--------------------

As you can probably tell, SU really wasn't so much about the academics for me. I got disillusioned with my major by junior year, especially since I've never completely fallen in with the crowd for any discipline. I'm still happy I went to Newhouse and did TRF, but I would have loved it here no matter what I had studied. Actually, I take that back. I could have studied any non math-and-science-related thing and been okay. Those classes just suck.
